Hydration Station
Hydration Station, GLAMFA, January 2022 CSUSLB SOA Galleries
A site specific installation and performance that offers visitors to GLAMFA a space to relax and drink room temperature water and herbal tonics. This work explores the epochs of water, which include circulation, contamination, filtration, elimination, and renewal. There are soft places to sit, bathrobes to bundle up with, and a poem on the wall, to be read by opening paper raindrops. The herbal tonics are prepared and distributed by the artist, and the jars are played for sound with a metal spoon. Their notes change as water levels change. This work is born out of an impulse to provide a cozy corner—a body-centered space—in a public art exhibition. The work desires to calm frayed nervous systems so that connections can arise from a place of ease. It’s a space of embodied care within an institutional gallery under the constraints of Covid19 regulations, an intersection of private and public space, and a moment of plentitude made with a scarce and precarious resource.
Materials: Robes meant for wearing, loungers meant for resting, water meant for drinking, esential oil mister, tiny watercolors, drinking glasses, ceramic containers, herbs, metal cart, toilet seat, tub, expired hydration packs.
